THOUGHT OF SENECA
Dear friends, I loved the story of the politician and philosopher Senaca told by Raphael. This man born in Cordoba (Spain) in the 4th century b.C., was very brave because they knew how to support his ideas at a time when doing so is risking his life.
Senaca lived during the period of the Roman Empire under the reign of three emperors and none of them ever appreciated as it deserved: the emperor Caligola condemned him to death but later pardoned him because it was convinced that the philosopher would be dead soon (he suffered asthma and chronic bronchitis); Emperor Claudius exiled him to Corsica and finally Nerone of which he was also a master, and he wanted it absolutely dead in 65 b. C. had to die.
What did Senaca to enrage all the emperors? Nothing special for us posterity. It was only a political concept which respected civil liberties almost unknown to the ancient Romans and since the people listened to him and loved him, was considered a hazard by the rulers. This great man came from a family of intellectuals, his father, Senaca the Elder, was a teacher of rhetoric (the art of good talk about the study) who wrote several books; he was the first to devote himself to politics, reaching the highest positions of commissioner and senator.
As long as he was allowed, Seneca reformed many laws antiquated Roman giving impetus to the economy, but every time he fell out of favor until his last day, he drew strength from his philosophical convictions, which can be summarized as:
-learning to overcome the fears and all the negative passions;
-farsi always an examination of conscience as required by the Pythagorean doctrine (of which Senaca Pythagoras was an admirer) before any action;
-only being reasonable human beings can attain true happiness.
Senaca hooray!
